The Loudoun Education Foundation is hosting a special reception honoring Ted Leonsis, owner of the Washington Capitals and Washington Wizards, on the release of his new book, The Business of Happiness: 6 Secrets to Extraordinary Success in Life and Work. The event is set for Monday August 9, from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. at 1757 Golf Club. The Civil War Comes Alive At Morven Park on June 26th and 27th. The Loudoun County Office of Transportation Services is hosting the meetings to offer citizens an opportunity to participate in planning the Tysons Express bus service which will begin this summer and operate weekdays through the end of 2013. George Mason University announced a major land gift of 37 acres in Loudoun County, Va., from Van Metre Companies. The property is located in Ashburn, near exit 6 of the Dulles Greenway. It is within one mile of a future Dulles Corridor Metrorail station.
“We are very excited and appreciative of the great generosity of the Van Metre Companies,” says Mason President Alan Merten.
“As we assess the university’s future and determine how best we can continue meeting the educational needs of our region, this significant gift provides us with strong options to make many of our programs more accessible to many more people.”
Mason is part of the Loudoun Planning Project, a partnership with Northern Virginia Community College, Loudoun County Public Schools, the Town of Leesburg and the Loudoun County government. The group is exploring the possibility of using the land to establish a Loudoun County campus for George Mason University.

The economic downturn has some developers feeling the pain. Selma Estates, LLC (An Edgemoore limited liability company) filed for Chapter 11 in November of last year. The company has stopped work on the Historic Selma property. Winchester Homes continues its new construction work and has about six lots left under an agreement with Edgemoore.
A Winchester VP said:
while the work stoppage has required Winchester to answer some challenging questions from visitors at the model home, the sales activity at Selma by his company continues.(The above was recently reported in The Loudoun Newsletter published semi-monthly by Virginia Newsletters LLC.)
Loudoun County's newest winery, the Bluemont Vinyard, opened in October, 2007. Raspberry's own Bob and Loree Rupy are partners in the new venture. Located on the eastern slopes of the Blue Ridge Mountains, Bluemont Vinyard boasts an elevation of about 1,000 feet. Their unique theme is "where elevation not only defines our location, but also our goal."

The Leesburg Vintner recently launced The Vintner Blog announcing Saturday wine tastings and various wine specials. The Vintner has anchored the corner of Loudoun and King Streets in downtown Leesburg since 1988. Mike Carroll, the proprietor, has a knack for finding and stocking great wines at a value price. Mike and his crew routinely hold wine tastings each Saturday afternoon from noon to 4:00 pm featuring some of the newest offerings by his distributors. In addition to great value offerings, the Vintner also carries a selection of great vintages from around the world including California, France and Italy.
A new venture has just launched called Modern Mom. Initially focused on Loudoun County, Modern Mom includes a full featured social media web portal complete with "Blogs Du Jour" and a new quarterly magazine.
